Original show description below.
While this engagement marks her San Francisco debut, Carmen Lundy is a bona fide jazz master who first made her mark more than three decades ago. Championed by jazz giants like Geri Allen, Billy Childs, Bobby Watson and Walter Bishop Jr., Lundy is a renaissance women whose creativity knows no bounds. A brilliant songwriter with several contemporary standards to her credit (“These Things You Are to Me”), she’s an actress, painter, bandleader, arranger and composer with an extensive book of finely wrought original songs.
Already well-established on the New York scene in 1985 when Dr. Herb Wong’s Black Hawk label released her first album Good Morning Kiss, she’s recorded a stellar body of work since then for JVC, Arabesque and Justin Time (which reissued Good Morning Kiss in 2002). Lundy has been running her own label Afrasia since 2005’s Jazz and the New Songbook: Live at the Madrid, and arrives in the Bay Area following the release of her 16th album, which features mostly the same cast of top-shelf players with whom she’s performing.
The vocalist and composer performs original music from her new album Modern Ancestors, an ode to the pillars of Jazz.
