Original show description below.
Captured on the classic album Forest Flower, which sold more than a million copies, the Charles Lloyd Quartet’s 1966 performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival made the leader a superstar while elevating his bandmates Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette into jazz’s pantheon. In the ensuing decades the tenor saxophonist and flutist has maintained his vaunted reputation for showcasing jazz’s most important younger artists, like this spacious, drummer-less trio with Gerald Clayton and Reuben Rogers.
A supremely gifted improviser hailed as one of the finest pianists of his generation, Clayton has performed many times in Miner Auditorium, both as a leader and as an accompanist with, in 2022 alone, Ambrose Akinmusire, Terri Lyne Carrington, and John Scofield. Rogers is a similarly ubiquitous and esteemed figure whose SFJAZZ credits include galvanizing performances with Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, and Lloyd’s New Quartet and all-star song-based band The Marvels. Designed for Lloyd’s most ardently melodic sojourns, the trio is gleaned from Kindred Spirits, a confederation of exceptional players who join together in various exploratory contexts.

Relentless creativity and individual expression are two distinct qualities that fuel Gerald Clayton both in life and as a musician
