Original show description below.
As vital as ever at 84, tenor saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd is a perpetual seeker. The 2015 NEA Jazz Master’s latest exploratory vehicle is the aptly named Chapel Trio with guitar giant Bill Frisell and bass virtuoso Thomas Morgan .
Conjuring music from the ineffable spaces where melodies unexpectedly coalesce and rhythmic movement dodges and feints around corners, Chapel Trio paints exquisite soundscapes rife with hints and suggestions rather than brash statements. The group expands Lloyd’s extrasensory relationship with Frisell, whose supple palette has made him an essential denizen of the saxophonist’s cosmos as a member of his song-based band The Marvels. The Hayward-raised Morgan is one New York’s most sought after bassists, appearing on more than 100 albums over the past two decades, including the quietly sumptuous live duo sessions with Frisell recorded at the Village Vanguard, 2017’s Small Town and 2019’s Epistrophy. As a triumvirate dedicated to beatific lyricism, Chapel Trio is the latest leap into the unknown by Lloyd, an artist who has thrived on jazz’s venturesome edge since the late 1950s.

Mr. Lloyd has come up with a strange and beautiful distillation of the American experience, part abandoned and wild, part immensely controlled and sophisticated.
