Original show description below.

A masterful multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, Sacramento-born Damani Rhodes brings a hard-hitting blend of R&B, jazz, soul, gospel, hip-hop and funk.

Beginning his musical journey in church, Rhodes excelled as a drummer and keyboardist, founding the acclaimed Sacramento fusion band Mino Yanci and working with the Oakland hip-hop collective SOL Development.

His five-track 2020 debut EP R.E.A.C.H. was released by Bandcamp in November, produced in collaboration with the Kennedy Center during Rhodes’ February 2020 residency and featuring Mino Yanci drummer Somadhi Johnson along with guest appearances by trumpeter Keyon Harrold and Oakland vocalist Vadia.

Rhodes’ latest project is a trio collaboration with Johnson and San Francisco poet laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin. Their debut single “Not a Poem” was released in March 2021, with a full-length album to follow.

Beyond the bandstand, Rhodes has established a career as composer and entrepreneur, receiving the 2019 YBCA 100 Award and contributing the soundtrack to the Norcal Emmy-winning film Dear Beloved. He launched the innovative drumming education app DrumTrax in 2017, which has been downloaded over 50,000 times.

Rhodes appeared at SFJAZZ with Mino Yanci during the 2019 Poetry Festival, and this Noise Pop co-presentation marks his return to the Joe Henderson Lab and the solo debut of a gifted multidimensional talent whose creative journey is just beginning.
