“A high branch on a family tree of New Orleans trombonists” (DownBeat), David L. Harris carries on the illustrious tradition of Crescent City brass masters, infusing his bone-deep command of the blues with a modern jazz edge and an evocative vocal approach. The Baton Rouge native first picked up the instrument at 16, inspired by the raucous voice-like plunger mute sound of Duke Ellington trombonists Tyree Glenn and Joe “Tricky Sam” Nanton as well as Count Basie associate Al Grey. Following his formal education at the University of Louisiana, Harris made a name as a superlative collaborator in work with Wynton Marsalis, Shannon Powell, Aaron Neville, Aloe Blacc, Dr. Michael White, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and Delfaeyo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

Since 2016, the 30-year-old trombonist has led a hard-swinging quartet of fellow New Orleans instrumentalists including pianist Shea Pierre, bassist Jasen Weaver, and drummer Miles Labat, releasing Harris’ debut as a bandleader, Blues I Felt, featuring a soulful selection of originals and re-worked takes on the music of Duke Ellington and Eddie Jefferson.
