Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra

MAR 28–31 | CAMPY & COOL

Mar 30 - Mar 31
Joe Henderson Lab

The first thing to know about Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra is that the vocalist and titular leader takes poetic license with his band’s designation. Strictly speaking, the combo accompanying the rumpled but suave singer described by The New York Times as “part lounge crooner, part folk balladeer” is several seats short of an orchestra. But over the course of 13 years, the New York quartet has made a habit out of taking imaginative leaps as part of a jazz/cabaret/theater demimonde, presenting narrative-driven productions marked by sly and often surreal observations.

Lipton’s acclaimed 2017 show The Outer Space, a sci-fi investigation of workplace weirdness produced by the Public Theater in Joe’s Pub, was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award. And the band’s earlier musical, No Place to Go, toured the U.S. and Europe after winning an Obie Award. New audiences recently discovered Lipton’s beguiling music when the orchestra played Pitchfork Paris and a prominent spot on the Amazon show Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

More

For the Lipton Orchestra’s Bay Area debut, expect to be transported into strange and disheveled realms.

[Lipton] is a man who has willed himself into a mongrel showbiz alter ego — part lounge crooner, part folk balladeer — to connect with and heighten his own worldly (and often universal) woes.
