“A pianist who is charting the course for the keyboard in the 21st century” (The Daily Beast), Dan Tepfer debuts at SFJAZZ in an innovative, groundbreaking performance that combines the technology he pioneered for his interactive Natural Machines audio-visual project with Miner Auditorium’s Immersive Media System to create a marriage of sound and vision like no other.

An artist who began classical studies at six but whose path included a degree in astrophysics before pursuing music full time, the New York-based Tepfer has spent his career balanced between classical music and jazz, winning the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, working with Pharoah Sanders, Billy Hart, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Joe Lovano, and Paul Motian, as well as premiering original works with the Avalon String Quartet and Escher String Quartet.

He’s led or co-led 10 albums including a pair of duo releases with the late alto icon Lee Konitz, and his most recent Sunnyside disc, Natural Machines, pairs Tepfer’s masterful improvisations with a software system that responds to and interacts with the pianist acoustically through the same Yamaha Disklavier piano — a duo for human and electronic improvisors on the same instrument.

Live performances of Tepfer’s Natural Machines project have included a fascinating visual element, with the computer feeding visual representations of the music to projection screens. For this performance, SFJAZZ’s Immersive Media System will turn Miner Auditorium into a 360º multimedia music environment, creating spontaneous digital art from acoustic sound.

He combines superb technique with a complex set of impulses: he's a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.
