Hailing from Seattle — a city well known for harboring a distinctive DIY aesthetic — High Pulp brings a scrappy, high-energy approach to the jazz tradition, infusing it with elements of hip-hop, shoegaze, punk rock, and electronic music. With a singular mix of ecstatic horns and enveloping electronic textures, they’ll raise the roof of the Joe Henderson Lab with music from their ANTI- Records debut Pursuit of Ends.
Encompassing influences from Miles Davis and Duke Ellington to Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine, the band was built around the whirlwind rhythms of drummer Bobby Granfelt, who describes their status as jazz outsiders this way: “We’ve never had an academic approach to jazz—most of us grew up playing in DIY bands—so it was the rawness and the energy and the absolute freedom of the music that called to us in the first place.”
Getting their start through a weekly residency at south Seattle’s jazz incubator The Royal Room, the band built a steady following and released a string of recordings including their debut album Bad Juice in 2018. Featuring guest appearances by Brandee Younger, Theo Croker, and Jaleel Shaw, Pursuit of Ends showcases a band poised to make major waves and convert the uninitiated.
