Original show description below.

Oakland-born organist and composer Sundra Manning has been a major force in Bay Area music for over three decades — winning a GRAMMY with R&B diva Lalah Hathaway, touring the world with MC Hammer at the height of his fame, and playing a critical role in the career of soul superstar Ledisi. She makes her SFJAZZ debut as a leader with these Joe Henderson Lab appearances.

In an origin story common among organists, Manning spent her formative years performing in church, and was mentored by Bay Area organ luminary and Tony! Toni! Toné! music director Carl Wheeler and André Crouch organist Chuck Webb. She toured with gospel legend James Clevelend at age 17 and got a taste of international fame with MC Hammer before collaborating with then-rising vocalist Ledisi, writing, arranging, producing, and engineering her star-making 2000 debut, Soulsinger.

The organist has worked widely as an instrumentalist and composer with The Braxton Brothers, Lalah Hathaway, and Michael Franti. One of her songs from Soulsinger, “Missing You,” was recorded by soul icon Peabo Bryson for his 2007 album of the same name.

Manning has performed at SFJAZZ several times with Martin Luther McCoy, including his December 2022 holiday concerts and at the SFJAZZ Gala 2020 honoring Mavis Staples. Join us for this special evening of soulful organ grooves.
