What "happened" to jazz during and after the 1960s? What role did rock, funk and soul play in its evolution? How can we connect jazz to today’s contemporary music? These topics and many others are the subject of this four-class series exploring the jazz lineage and its musical “offspring.” Among the many artists we will survey are Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Wayne Shorter, Nina Simone, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Gil Scott Heron, and many more! From the post-bop evolution to the hip-hop revolution, we will uncover some of the groundbreaking artists whose work blurred the lines between jazz and popular music.
