There’s no band on the horizon like Harriet Tubman, a funk/fusion power trio that specializes in open form improvisation. Launched in 1998, the ensemble quickly established a kinetic sound built on the coruscating drumming of J.T. Lewis, the relentless grooves of Melvin Gibbs’ electric bass, and the spinning arpeggios emanating from Brandon Ross’s electric guitar (and sometimes banjo).

Their performance at the 2018 Earshot Jazz Festival was cited as the Number 1 best live concert of the year by NPR jazz critic Nate Chinen. Each player is a prolific innovator in his own right. Gibbs made a name for himself in the 1980s as a member of drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition. A founding member of Vernon Reid’s Living Colour, Lewis has recorded with a vast constellation of stars, from Tina Turner and Dionne Warwick to Henry Threadgill and David Murray. Ross has collaborated widely with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Gene Lake, Henry Threadgill, Don Byron, the Lounge Lizards, and Wadada Leo Smith (who joined the trio on the 2017 album Araminta). Harriet Tubman’s fifth and latest release is 2018’s dense and liberating The Terror End of Beauty (Sunnyside).

More

In evoking the great antebellum freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman made it clear that the triumvirate is dedicated to expanding the freedom trails blazed by Ornette Coleman, George Clinton and Jimi Hendrix.

As free as their iconic abolitionist namesake, Harriet Tubman is an irresistible force of truth, beauty, and electric improvisation.
