Original show description below.

A group of the finest young musicians to have come up through SFJAZZ’s multiple award-winning High School All-Stars program return to pay homage to living jazz legend Herbie Hancock and his landmark 1973 Columbia album Head Hunters. Recorded, appropriately, in San Francisco at Different Fur Trading Co. in the Mission District and Wally Heider’s studio in the Tenderloin, Head Hunters marked a mainstream change in jazz, fully embracing rhythms from funk and rock and replacing the acoustic piano with the Fender Rhodes electric piano, Hohner clavinet, and various synthesizers. Introducing the world to the worldwide hit “Chameleon” and an iconic re-working of Hancock’s beloved “Watermelon Man,” the album is listed among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time and has been added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as a “culturally, historically or aesthetically important” recording. The High School All-Stars alumni bring a new energy to Hancock’s music.

This year’s High School All-Stars Alumni Concert is part of a Hotplate series featuring 2004 trumpet alumnus Will Magid, whose combo will reimagine Herbie Hancock’s seminal Head Hunters.
