“A composer drawn to shimmering harmonies and ethereal textures” (Mercury News), Sofia, Bulgarian-born, Bay Area-based guitarist Hristo Vitchev and his longstanding quartet perform original material from Vitchev’s newest First Orbit Sounds release, Of Light and Shadows, celebrating a decade as a band. An innovative artist drawn to the mix of classical guitar music, modern jazz, folk songs, and the avant-garde, Vitchev was voted to DownBeat’s list of Rising Star guitarists and has performed widely with Portland-based pianist Weber Iago (now known as Jasnam Daya Singh) and recorded Rhodopa, a gorgeously intimate 2013 duo album with clarinet master and fellow Bulgarian Liubomir Krastev.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, the 37-year-old Vitchev has recorded steadily as a leader, averaging an album a year that focuses on his ethereal, impressionistic compositions, recalling the classic “ECM sound” while retaining their sharp edges, mesmerizing grooves, and telepathic interplay. A highly active performer and educator, Vitchev is best known to SFJAZZ audiences through his collaboration with vocalist Tessa Souter during the 2017-2018 Season that has led to an ongoing musical partnership.

More

With Of Light and Shadows, Vitchev has achieved a 10-year milestone as a bandleader, composer, and guitarist that stands as his most accomplished project to date, promising an incredible future.

If Pat Metheny and Larry Carlton are considered the kings of impressionistic jazz guitar, then certainly Hristo Vitchev is a crown prince and ready to lead a palace coup.
