JazzTimes magazine calls Jackie Ryan “one of the most outstanding vocalists of her generation,” and it’s difficult to disagree. The Bay Area native Jackie Ryan has been on the rise since the late 1990s, when her acclaimed debut album, For Heaven’s Sake, made a big splash on the national jazz scene, and the accolades have continued to roll in. Ryan has lent her sublime voice to work with jazz heavyweights Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, Jon Hendricks, Ernie Watts and others, and released seven superb albums under her own name including 2009’s JazzWeek chart-topper Doozy featuring pianist Cyrus Chestnut.

Her latest OpenArt recording, Listen Here, was produced and arranged by GRAMMY-winning bassist John Clayton and encompasses a wide array of jazz idioms, from blues and gospel-flavored songs to Gershwin classics and original compositions, showcasing Ryan’s blend of crystalline pitch, soulful expressiveness and unmatched versatility. The album features a first-call band including piano phenom Gerald Clayton, saxophonist Rickey Woodard, and SFJAZZ Collective drummer Obed Calvaire, soaring to the number one position on JazzWeek’s national charts, staying there for four weeks.

She not only has style, she has her own style, the true calling card of a real jazz singer. An endangered species if ever there was one.
