Original show description below.

Led by the masterful saxophonist Steven Lugerner, the hard-hitting Jacknife was formed specifically to honor the legacy of jazz great Jackie McLean, and for this Hotplate performance, the band brings their youthful energy to bear on McLean’s iconic 1965 Blue Note session, It’s Time.

Raised in San Francisco and a graduate of New York’s New School, Lugerner is one of the most accomplished young firebrands on the scene, with an impeccable résumé including work with pianists Fred Hersch, Jason Moran and Myra Melford; drummers Albert “Tootie” Heath, Matt Wilson, John Hollenbeck and Allison Miller; saxophonists Jane Ira Bloom, Dayna Stephens, Chris Cheek, Anat Cohen and Miguel Zenon, and trumpeter Ralph Alessi. “An impeccably trained multi-reedist” (The New York Times), Lugerner recorded an collection of McLean’s compositions on his 2016 release JACKNIFE: The Music of Jackie McLean, including the leader’s “Dis Dat” and trumpeter Charles Tolliver’s angular album opener “Cancellation,” and for this show, dives further in with his superb band.
