Jazz’s greatest living soprano saxophonist performs with her spectacular quartet including pianist Dawn Clement, bassist Mark Helias, and drummer Bobby Previte. Possessing a painterly style and firm command of electronic textures, Bloom creates music that gives form to mysterious beauty and subconscious emotions. Regularly cited as jazz’s foremost master on her wily instrument, she’s distinguished herself over the past 35 years as a resourceful bandleader and a melodically expansive composer particularly inspired by painters and poets. She’s also a tenured professor at The New School and a Guggenheim Fellow.

Bloom’s latest album, 2017’s Wild Lines: Improvising Emily Dickinson (Outline), features the same stellar band she brings to SFJAZZ, with rising Seattle pianist Clement, veteran bassist Helias, and drummer Previte, a brilliant composer and bandleader in his own right with some three-dozen albums as a leader or co-leader. He’s been a Bloom mainstay since her critically acclaimed 1995 album The Nearness, an all-star sextet session focusing on her original compositions with Kenny Wheeler, Julian Priester, and Fred Hersch. She introduced the quartet with Clement and Helias on 2011’s sumptuously beautiful Wingwalker. Working with the support of a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works award, Bloom designed the music for Wild Lines for the quartet, finding an ideal muse in Dickinson’s telegraphic verse.

Jane Ira Bloom projects her tone as a round, silvery beam, warm and diffuse along the edges but pinpoint-clear at the center.
