Saxophonist, composer, and educator Jason Hainsworth and his expanded ensemble perform music from Joe Henderson’s 1966 Blue Note masterpiece Mode For Joe.
The Houston-born Hainsworth is an alumnus of the city’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts — the same prestigious institution that produced Jason Moran, Eric Harland, Robert Glasper, Kendrick Scott, Helen Sung, Chris Dave, Andre Hayward, and many others. A student of the legendary Ellis Marsalis, Hainsworth is the Assistant Director of the RJAM program at San Francisco Conservatory and his latest album is the Origin Records release Third Ward Stories featuring Josh Evans and Johnathan Blake.
Henderson’s fifth album as a leader and last for Blue Note for twenty years, Mode For Joe employed a super-powered septet including Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, and Joe Chambers, and is easily among Henderson’s most assured sessions. It features definitive readings of now-classic compositions “A Shade of Jade,” “Caribbean Fire Dance,” and Walton’s title track — all now indelible parts of the standards songbook. In his review for the All Music Guide, Eric Starr called the album “a great example of modern jazz at its best.”
