Celebrating the legacies of Bay Area-based jazz giants Bobby Hutcherson and Eddie Marshall, drummer and San Francisco native Jaz Sawyer leads a crack band featuring special guest Steve Nelson and SFJAZZ Collective pianist Edward Simon along with a number of surprise guests. The group performs material spanning Hutcherson’s spectacular career, from the vibraphone great’s classic 60s Blue Note sessions to his adventurous Columbia and Landmark albums of the 70s featuring longtime collaborator Marshall on drums.

A masterful percussionist, composer, and educator, Sawyer has built his career through work with Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jacky Terrasson, and Bobby Hutcherson, and has had a long association with SFJAZZ, performing in numerous settings including the 50th anniversary celebration of Duke Ellington’s Concert of Sacred Music at Grace Cathedral in 2015.

Veteran vibraphonist Steve Nelson has led a illustrious career as sideman, working with Grant Green, James Spaulding and Kenny Barron and David "Fathead" Newman. He was the vibist of choice among some of his generation's most talented up-and-comers, including Bobby Watson, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, Geoffrey Keezer and Lewis Nash. He has an extended association with bass giant Dave Holland, and has recorded a half dozen dates as a leader.
