The Cuban born, Bay Area based percussionist and singer is among the most versatile and accomplished artists on the world music scene, performing with his dance-heavy, dynamic ensemble that is “one of the few groups in the United States playing timba, a new-millennium musical idea from Cuba that fuses post-revolutionary innovations like songo with funk and jazz” (SF Chronicle).
Arriving in the U.S. from Cuba in 1980, Díaz spent over a decade paying dues with Bay Area Afro-Cuban stalwarts Conjunto Céspedes before stepping out as a leader with piano great Omar Sosa in Oaktown Irawo, featuring Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi. Díaz was a member of Garibaldi’s influential percussion trio Talking Drums with fellow percussionist Michael Spiro, and has gone on to recordings and performances with Stevie Wonder, the Dave Matthews Band, Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Coleman, the Caribbean Jazz Project, Jane Bunnett, Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum, and more.
Dedicated to the rollicking mix of traditional Cuban forms blended with funk, pop, and jazz that has captivated the world, QBA brings an unforgettable night of groove and Cuban soul.
