Original show description below.

Described by DownBeat magazine as “one of the foremost ensembles in jazz,” the Sound Prints quintet – co-led by Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas – is smart and loose, rambunctious and risk-taking. At SFJAZZ, the group will honor the great saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, whose unconstrained, “anything is possible” approach to improvisation has inspired the quintet since its founding in 2013.

That year, the Monterey Jazz Festival commissioned Shorter to compose a pair of tunes for Sound Prints, which premiered them at the summer festival. Titled “Destination Unknown” and “To Sail Beyond the Sunset,” Shorter’s compositions set the stage for the quintet’s joyful and searching explorations of its growing repertoire. Whether playing its arrangements of 1960s classics by Shorter (“Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum,” “JuJu”) or its own originals, the group “burns hot, swings hard and showcases” its leaders’ “unmistakably vivid personalities,” DownBeat adds.
