Original show description below.

A dedicated cadre of players has fanned the flame of Latin jazz in the Bay Area since the 1970s, and few have done more to stoke the clave conflagration than flautist, percussionist and composer John Calloway. Over the years he’s worked with a glittering cast of giants in jazz and Latin music, including Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Max Roach, Omar Sosa, John Santos, and Dizzy Gillespie.

As the artistic director of the San Francisco Latin Jazz Youth Orchestra he’s also mentored some of the region’s brightest stars. Backed by a top-shelf rhythm section led by pianist Murray Low, one of the Bay Area’s most sought after Latin jazz accompanists, Calloway’s ongoing wind ensemble the Flute Odyssey focuses on his inventive arrangements across an array of kindred Latin styles.

With longtime member Miguel Martinez on flute, alto flute and indigenous flutes and newcomers Chloë Scott Jones on flute and alto flute, Erika Oba on flute and Japanese bamboo shinobue, and special guest Karl Young on shakuhachi, Calloway’s Flute Odyssey is an adventure into the outer reaches of flutopia.
