Over the past decade guitarist Justin Rock has cut a brilliant swath across the Bay Area music scene. Involved in far too many bands and projects to be pinned down in any particular style, he’s known for elevating whatever musical context he’s inhabiting. As an improviser and composer, Rock has distinguished himself with a series of well-conceived albums, such as 2021’s Feed the Feed by his Golden Age Ensemble.
A series of densely orchestrated soundscapes set to sinewy grooves, the project features trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire, Andrew Dixon on woodwinds, Steve Blum on synth, and the commanding rhythm section tandem of bassist Giulio Cetto and drummer Mike Mitchell (or Mike Quigg). He’s also worked extensively in several of the smartest bands working to expand the frontiers of the Bay Area jazz scene, including Dillon Vado's Never Weather, Logan Kane's Open Eyes, and Steven Lugerner and The Sluggish Ensemble.

There's an unassuming charm and wry humor to much of Rock's composing that's Frisell-like, though he is a completely different sort of guitarist: hard-edged and percussive, not legato, with a clean, largely undistorted tone like Pat Martino or Jim Hall.
