Original show description below.
“A genre unto herself” (Rolling Stone), innovative guitarist and composer Kaki King is a true musical iconoclast who blends blinding virtuosity with a jaw-dropping arsenal of extended techniques, turning the acoustic guitar into an instrument of previously unexplored rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic possibilities.
The Atlanta born, Brooklyn based King began playing guitar at age four and took formative inspiration from fingerstyle master Preston Reed, developing a singular approach that utilizes fingerstyle technique, percussive thumps, fingerboard tapping, non-standard tunings, electronic loops and effects to create her highly individual and deeply melodic original compositions. Since the release of her 2003 debut Everybody Loves You, a record that inspired the All Music Guide to call her “the most original voice on the acoustic guitar in a generation,” King has had an explosive impact on popular music — appearing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, recording and touring with the Foo Fighters, collaborating with Timbaland and the Mountain Goats, and contributing her unmistakable artistry to the soundtracks of August Rush, Sean Penn’s Into the Wild and the Twilight movies. She was named to Rolling Stone’s 2006 list of “The New Guitar Gods” — the youngest artist and only woman included — and has released a trio of EPs and eight full-length albums, including her latest, The Neck is a Bridge to the Body.
King has defined herself not only as simply one of the best guitarists that the world may have ever come to know, but one of the most interestingly ingenious innovators of music at large.
