Trumpeter Nate Wooley and multi-reedist Ken Vandermark, two of the brightest talents working at the exploratory fringes of jazz composition and improvisation, revisit their superb duo. Named a 1999 MacArthur “genius” Fellow and selected as one of DownBeat’s “25 For The Future” list of most significant improvisors, the Chicago-based Vandermark recorded 15 albums with his masterful Vandermark 5 quintet and collaborated with a host of fellow boundary-pushers including Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilssen-Love, Paul Lytton, Joe Morris, and Fred Anderson.
New York trumpet phenom Wooley is a master of extended techniques, expanding the vocabulary of the instrument in startling new ways. Veteran of work with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, and Evan Parker, Wooley is a Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation grant recipient who began performing in duo with Vandermark in 2013, taking inspiration from the vaunted duo of West Coast free jazz pioneers John Carter and Bobby Bradford. Wooley and Vandermark have released a pair of albums documenting their collaboration, including 2014’s East By Northwest, and 2015’s All Directions Home. They will be celebrating the release of their new album of long-form works, performing it in its entirety.
