Honoring the jazz legend Thelonious Monk on his birthday (10/10) is an SFJAZZ tradition, going back to the organization's beginning.

“The pinnacle of the jazz-piano tradition,” (JazzTimes), pianist and composer Kenny Barron performs in and curates this celebration of Monk’s 102nd birthday with fellow piano great Benny Green and virtuoso guitarist Miles Okazaki in an evening of solos, duos, and trios.

Miles Okazaki's WORK named NY Times #5 2018 Album of the Year

An 11-time GRAMMY nominee and 2010 NEA Jazz Master recipient, Barron is a singular artist who is uniquely qualified to honor Monk, having made the eccentric genius’ music a constant part of his repertoire and performing for over a decade with the Monk alumni band Sphere. He helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s and has recorded nearly 50 albums as a bandleader over his five-decade career, including seven sessions with Sphere, the celebrated tribute quartet featuring former Monk band veterans Charlie Rouse and Ben Riley.

With his “leaping percussive touch and nonstop bebop flow, his splayed joy-spring chords, Thelonious Monk stabs and gospel voicings” (San Jose Mercury News), Green developed his lyrical and propulsive playing in the star-making bands of a pair of longtime Monk associates, drummer Art Blakey and bassist Ray Brown. The former Berkeley High wunderkind has regularly made Monk compositions a part of his three-decade bandleading career, infusing the icon’s singular works with irrepressible joy.

2005 Thelonious Monk International Guitar Competition runner-up and a veteran of work with Barron, Steve Coleman, Jane Monheit, and Stanley Turrentine, Okazaki has made an unprecedented commitment to the work of Monk with the recent release of Work, his exhaustive solo guitar document of Monk’s complete 70-composition songbook. Called “a singular achievement,” and a “monumental statement of devotion.” by The New York Times, Work made their list as one of the best albums of 2018.
