In an evening titled “Women on the Rise,” piano giant Kenny Barron is joined by a selection of superlative instrumentalists including rising saxophonist Hailey Niswanger, guitarist Camila Meza, and vibraphonist Nikara Warren. Niswanger was a member of Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society band and is currently a member of the Wolff & Clark Expedition. Acclaimed by DownBeat as a “rising star,” saxophonist Niswanger is a two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award. The New York Times calls Meza “a bright young singer and guitarist with an ear for music of both folkloric and pop intention.” Barron’s granddaughter, Warren studied with Stefon Harris and received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. They are backed by Barron’s superb trio featuring bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake.

ABOUT KENNY BARRON
Called “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” by The Los Angeles Times, Kenny Barron is an NEA Jazz Master and eleven-time GRAMMY nominee who helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s catapulted him into the spotlight. Extensive work with Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef, Stan Getz, James Moody and Ron Carter built his peerless reputation as a sideman, and he has recorded nearly 50 albums as a bandleader over his five-decade career. A seven-time recipient of Best Pianst by the Jazz Journalists Association, Barron leads an ironclad trio with bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake, and regularly performs as a soloist and in duet with bassist Dave Holland and violinist Regina Carter. Having taught piano and harmony at Rutgers University for over 25 years, he is currently on the faculty of the Julliard School of Music and was awarded Honorary Doctorates from Berklee College of Music and SUNY Empire State.
