Bay Area vocalist Kim Nalley “has pipes to burn and works the stage like she means it” (San Francisco Chronicle). A blues-loving jazz singer with a rich and evocative voice, Nalley honors the legacy of one of her greatest influences — singer, songwriter, and social activist Nina Simone.
Easily one of the premier jazz voices in the Bay Area, Nalley is a multiple award winner who has had her hand in many areas of music and the arts – performing around the world, writing about jazz for the San Francisco Chronicle, running a jazz club, and acting on stage and screen. She has performed with a wide array of musicians, playing Gershwin with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony and grooving with saxophonists Houston Person and David “Fathead” Newman.
Her signature work includes the Ella Fitzgerald bio musical Ella: the American Dream, the Billie Holiday tribute The Heart of Lady Day, and her show in tribute to Nina Simone, documented on her 2006 album She Put a Spell On Me and featuring classics including “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “See-Line Woman,” and “Mississippi Goddamn.” In their review of the album, the SF Weekly called Nalley “the perfect choice to interpret and pay tribute to the late, great Dr. Simone.”
