A collective quartet that brings together women from across the Americas, LADAMA creates infectious pan-Latin music with a mission. The ensemble grew directly out of OneBeat, an initiative of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that’s curated by Found Sound Nation (a Bang On a Can spinoff). The OneBeat residency program brings together musicians from around the world to collaborate on social engagement and composition, and 2014’s confab led Venezuelan multi-instrumentalist and journalist Maria Fernanda Gonzalez (a master of the bandola llanera), Brazilian percussionist, educator, singer and composer Lara Klaus, and Colombian composer, percussionist, educator and sound artist Daniela Serna to launch LADAMA, a project designed to reach communities across South America. With the addition of Sara Lucas, a New York-based singer, songwriter and guitarist, the women of LADAMA expanded their scope to encompass North America too.

The group’s 2017 eponymous debut album on San Francisco’s Six Degrees Records announced the arrival of a joyous rhythmic powerhouse. Dedicated to finding new ways to integrate jazz, folkloric forms and popular music, LADAMA is creating a new sound that speaks to the undying aspirations of marginalized peoples whose wealth of culture is coupled with a lack of material resources.
