Step into the SFJAZZ “living room” and hear artists and tastemakers spinning their favorite recordings while in conversation with SFJAZZ Founder and Executive Artistic Director Randall Kline. Listening Parties offer listeners the chance to get behind-the- scenes and hear about music from the artist’s perspective. The format is an on-stage conversation in the Robert N. Miner Auditorium, accompanied by the artist’s pick of recorded, and sometimes live, excerpts. The conversation closes with questions from the audience followed by a reception with the artist.
ABOUT JOHN SANTOS
Born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District amidst an extended family of Puerto Rican musicians, he’s been at the center of the Bay Area’s Latin music scene for nearly four decades, and was one of SFJAZZ’s first four Resident Artistic Directors in 2013. As a visionary bandleader and noted historian, he has served on the Smithsonian Institution’s Latin Jazz Advisory Committee.
Far more than a master percussionist, John Santos is an acclaimed educator (Stanford, Yale) and cultural activist, a keeper of the Afro-Caribbean flame steeped in Cuban and Puerto Rican folkloric traditions as well as salsa and Latin jazz. Join us for a lively discussion of how the Caribbean Basin and its many cultures influenced the evolution of jazz and so much of American music. Santos' will also give insights into his March 2020 performances at SFJAZZ, "John Santos Presents," a celebration of expressions of the Greater Antilles.
…a sparkplug for a wave of musical invention at the vortex where Jazz, Latin and other ideas meet.
