Original show description below.

The celebrated Bay Area ensemble, whose name means “The Mockingbirds,” creates a compelling contemporary sound deeply rooted in rural Mexican folk music, artfully merging contemporary influences with traditional folkloric instruments.

Returning to SFJAZZ for the first time in six years, Los Cenzontles bring an infectious energy to every performance and project, having collaborated with Taj Mahal, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt and many others. Founded in 1989 by guitarist Eugene Rodriguez, the group is a floating assemblage of vocalists and instrumentalists who first appeared on record as part of Papa’s Dream, the children’s album produced by Rodriguez for the seminal L.A. Chicano rock band, Los Lobos.

Los Cenzontles are also the performing ambassadors for the San Pablo-based music academy and community space of the same name, devoted to the furthering of traditional Mexican music and art in the Bay Area.

The band has recorded nearly 30 albums, and their newest release, Juntos a la Distancia (Together at a Distance), is an inspiring document of songs written during the pandemic dedicated to the concept that music can bring connection, consolation, and comfort, featuring guests David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas from Los Lobos as well as La Marisoul from La Santa Cecilia.

(The group) both honors and upends traditional Mexican music, tapping deep roots as it flowers into something completely new, and distinctly American.
