Original show description below.

The two-time GRAMMY-winning violin master, equally versed in the classical repertoire and the jazz tradition, is best known for his work with Turtle Island Quartet, Stanley Clarke, Bob Weir, and countless Bay Area groups including the all-star San Francisco String Trio. He performs these two nights with a superb trio including pianist Tammy L. Hall and bassist Marcus Shelby.

A native of Copenhagen, Tolling began classical violin studies at age six and discovered jazz at fourteen. During studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, the violin virtuoso was referred to bass legend and 2022 NEA Jazz Master Stanley Clarke by violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, launching an extended affiliation that included innumerable performances and Clarke’s incendiary 2007 album The Toys of Men. Tolling began his nine-year membership with the Turtle Island Quartet in 2003, winning GRAMMYs for their 2005 release 4+Four and 2007’s A Love Supreme – The Legacy of John Coltrane.

He currently leads his band, Mads Tolling & The Mads Men, that regularly tours the States, and has written two violin concertos that have been performed all over the world.

Mads first performed at SFJAZZ back in 2010 in a double bill with Regina Carter and worked with Marcus Shelby’s Orchestra during his Duke Ellington tribute in 2019 and appeared as a featured artist on Shelby’s album Transitions.
