“A musical force unlike any other” (Popmatters), pianist, producer, and DJ Mark de Clive-Lowe is an artist with established roots in multiple sonic worlds. The son of a Japanese mother and New Zealander father, de Clive-Lowe began piano studies at four, entranced by his father’s record collection and inspired by his brother’s pianistic inclinations. Early exposure to Tokyo’s thriving club scene cemented the desire for serious study of jazz, and later immersion in hip-hop and R&B while a teen in Auckland gave the budding producer his first taste of collaboration with other like-minded musicians.

Upon a career-making move to London in the late-1990s, the piano was temporarily sidelined in favor of the synthesizer, mixing board and drum machine, and de Clive-Lowe was a major developer of the broken beat scene that blended cutting-edge electronics, classic funk, and percussion-heavy global influences with a distinctly jazz-inspired approach. He has collaborated with Lauren Hill, Kamasi Washington, Eric Harland, Sheila E, Jody Watley, Hiatus Kaiyote, bass virtuoso Pino Palladino, SFJAZZ Collective trombonist Robin Eubanks and dozens more, contributing to over 300 releases while releasing 18 full-length albums and a half-dozen EPs under his own name. His latest Mashibeats/Ropeadope release, Live at the Blue Whale, documents a Los Angeles performance that pays tribute to jazz icons Yusef Lateef, Sun Ra, and Ahmad Jamal — three of de Clive-Lowe’s biggest inspirations.
