Bay Area vocalist and SFJAZZ Collective member Martin Luther McCoy honors the legacy of landmark gospel group The Soul Stirrers and legendary member Sam Cooke with this rousing tribute featuring guest singers Cornell Carter and Tony Lindsay. Steeped in gospel music from his childhood in the church, McCoy is the perfect artist to honor the sacred music of the Soul Stirrers and Cooke, bringing the soul and the spirit to this morning performance.

Rising to international attention for his work with The Roots, Cody ChesnuTT, Dave Matthews, Jill Scott, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Zion I, McCoy is perhaps best known for his on-screen role as the Jimi Hendrix inspired character “Jo-Jo” in director Julie Taymor’s Oscar-nominated 2007 Beatles tribute film Across the Universe. He made a memorable appearance in comic megastar Dave Chappelle’s 2005 concert film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, and was a highlighted artist during Chappelle’s 2014 SFJAZZ performances.

More

Originally formed in 1926, The Soul Stirrers pioneered the vocal quartet style in gospel that directly influenced the development of doo-wop, soul, and the Motown sound. Cooke joined the group in 1950 at age 19 and served as lead vocalist for six years, recording the hits “Jesus Gave Me Water” and “Peace in the Valley” among others. He was widely credited for bringing a new, younger audience to gospel, setting the stage for his emergence as a solo artist and his massive career in secular pop music.

Luther invites listeners to "enjoy this funky ride." It's a trip worth taking, fueled by old-school, power-to-the-peeps politics and more soul than a Sunday revival meeting.
