Original show description below.
A Bay Area jazz mainstay for the past decade, guitarist Mason Razavi has honed a personal take on the blues-tinged straight-ahead sound pioneered by Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. With his clean attack and beautifully crafted lines he’s earned recognition as a fluid and resourceful improviser in a variety of settings, from a blazing organ trio to a sumptuously orchestrated nonet.
Based in San Jose, he got his start as a teenager playing in rock bands, but greatly expanded his range of interests and influences studying composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music. After several years concentrating intently on classical guitar he gained recognition with a series of solo recitals and the 2012 release People, Places, and Monsters. Since then Razavi has distinguished himself on the electric guitar. He’s best known for his two electro-acoustic Quartet Plus albums with pianist/keyboardist Bennett Roth-Newell, bassist Dan Robbins and drummer Cody Rhodes. Focusing on Razavi’s ear-catching originals, the albums also feature an expanded version of the band with five of the region’s top horn players.
A thoughtful player and composer that offers the listener an introspective experience of deeper meaning.
