Original show description below.
The raucous Bay Area-based saxophones-and-drums trio that “puts the fun back in funk” (JazzTimes) honors the New Orleans groove legends. Led by the explosively propulsive drummer Jeremy Steinkoler, Mo’Fone builds on the musicianship minted from years of jazz experience combined with a dance inspiring, off-the-rails sense of fun — a perfect match for The Meters’ classic hits “Cissy Strut,” “Look-Ka Py Py,” and “They All Ask’d for You.”
Steinkoler is one of the Bay Area’s most esteemed rhythm masters, having worked with Dave Ellis and members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band among others, and is a devoted educator. Altoist Larry De La Cruz has shared the stage with the likes of Bobby Hutcherson, Lou Rawls, Phil Woods, and the Temptations, and recorded with brass king Mike Vax. Baritone saxophonist Jim Peterson is a 20-year veteran of the Bay Area scene, with a resume including work with Mitch Woods, Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, and Indigo Swing. Originally performing the music of The Meters for a SFJAZZ Hotplate night at Amnesia in the Mission district nearly a decade ago, the band brings their undeniable chemistry to the Joe Henderson Lab for a super-funky reprise.
