A sublimely talented young trombonist and vocalist versed in jazz, Brazilian music and the Afro-Cuban tradition, Bay Area-born Natalie Cressman returns with music from her new album, Setting Rays of Summer. Cressman’s musical pedigree is impeccable, growing up as the daughter of vocalist Sandy Cressman and Santana trombonist Jeff Cressman, gaining fame as a member of Phish leader Trey Anastasio’s solo project, and working with Nicholas Payton and Wycliffe Gordon.

When her dream of being a ballet dancer was derailed by an injury, she committed to music completely, and hasn’t looked back. A virtuosic instrumentalist and gifted singer, she’s a former member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars who has made good on her prodigious beginnings, working with a diverse range of artists including salsa icon Pete Escovedo’s Latin Jazz Orchestra, world music giant Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, and iconoclastic multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum. Now based in New York, Cressman celebrates the release of her fifth album, Setting Rays of Summer, a diverse 10-track session written and performed in collaboration with Brazilian guitarist, singer and composer Ian Faquini featuring sensuous new material sung in Portuguese, English, and French.

Her trombone is world-class, but her singing voice is another thing entirely, an empathic entity that channels the ages. Cressman’s is a flawless act that can only get better with time and age. Yep, I smell a GRAMMY.

Her veteran skills as a trombonist are clear, but what's even more impressive is her vocal performance and talents as a lyricist.
