Original show description below.

A Bay Area-bred saxophonist and composer and former member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, New York-based artist Nora Stanley makes a welcome return with an evening of music by the great Joe Henderson, accompanied by her excellent quintet.

Brought up around a variety of musical influences, Stanley attended Berkeley High School and participated in the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars before studies with Gary Bartz, Billy Hart, Eddie Henderson, and Dan Wall at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Ohio.

She’s shared the stage with Ambrose Akinmusire, Gary Bartz, Dayna Stephens, and Jerry Gonzalez, and regularly performs around New York with a number of ensembles including bands led by Luis Salcido and Alfredo Colon, and works in an ongoing duo project with keyboardist Benny Bock.

For this date, Stanley and her quintet will be performing Joe Henderson’s compositions from his own albums as well as music from recordings on which Henderson was a sideman, including records by Andrew Hill and Horace Silver. In her words, Stanley plans to “arrange this material in new ways and present it as part of the evolving trajectory of the music that JH was such a pioneer in."
