Please note: This is a Dance Floor/standing show.

For nearly 25 years, the Bay Area-based Afro-Cuban band has distinguished itself as one of the very few performing ensembles that specializes in the refined and elegant dance-inspiring Cuban style known as danzón, transporting audiences to the Havana social clubs of the 1950s.

Founded and co-led by violinist, composer, and arranger Tregar Otton, the 11-piece charanga (traditional Cuban dance band) of strings, woodwinds, and percussion brings a mix of timeless danzónes and contemporary, timba-influenced compositions in performances that reward both dancers and deep listeners.

Otton, who gained crucial experience with the pioneering Bay Area band Conjunto Céspedes, worked closely with the stars of Cuban music while living in New York, and formed Moderna Tradición with dancer Roberto Borrell to celebrate the proud danzón legacy. The band has released a trio of superb albums and features a talent-laden lineup including legendary percussion master Michael Spiro and piano great Marco Diaz.

More

In his review for Latin Beat Magazine, KCSM radio Music Director Jesse “Chuy” Varela called the band, “Richly authentic... old wine in a new bottle for a younger generation to savor.”

The robust and dedicated Bay Area-based group founded in 1996 by percussionist Roberto Borrell is doing its part championing Cuban musical tradition of early vintage.
