Original show description below.
Since moving to San Francisco in 2009, New York-born saxophonist Patrick Wolff has become a creative force on the Bay Area music scene. As a sideman he’s worked extensively with bassist/bandleader Marcus Shelby and singer/songwriter Diana Gameros, serving as an instrumental muse for these signature Bay Area artists on clarinet, tenor and alto saxophones. As a bandleader, he’s honed an enthralling repertoire arranging overlooked gems by masters like Clifford Jordan, Lucky Thompson, and Elmo Hope. And as a composer, Wolff has crafted a book of intricate, intertwining compositions for his sextet. He introduced the lapidary sound on two captivating 2011 albums, Noose of Light and Your Obedient Ghost.
His band’s latest incarnation includes dependably incisive trumpeter Mike Olmos and reed expert Matt Renzi. Los Gatos-raised Richard Sears, who featured Wolff’s tenor on his own all-star sextet date Altadena with drum legend Tootie Heath, holds down the piano chair. He’s joined in the dynamic rhythm section by bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Hamir Atwal.
The superlative saxophonist and composer presents his new Sextet made up of the Bay Area’s best, performing his exploratory original music.
