Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers w/ Bobby Black

Jun 08
Herbst Theatre, War Memorial

“The best thing to come out of the jump/swing revival” (Seattle Times), singer Lavay Smith and her deftly swinging Red Hot Skillet Lickers perform the music of country music icon Patsy Cline, with special guest pedal steel master Bobby Black.

A singer whose style draws on Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Little Esther Phillips, Smith and arranger/pianist Chris Siebert assembled the Red Hot Skillet Lickers to perform arrangements of tunes from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, as well as original numbers, building an enviable fan base through a tireless touring schedule across the United States, Canada and Europe. The seven-piece band features a rogue’s gallery of robustly swinging soloists who cut their teeth with everyone from Big Joe Turner to Ray Charles, and for this night the band is augmented by Black, who has been a stalwart of the Bay Area music scene since the 1950s, performing with Commander Cody, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Asleep at the Wheel. Smith, Black, and the band salute Cline, a pioneering and highly influential figure in American music whose hits, including “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and “She’s Got You” have become treasured parts of popular culture.
