A gifted vibraphonist, composer, and producer, Sasha Berliner won the prestigious Letter One Rising Star Award in 2018. A San Francisco native, she began on drums at eight and attended the Oakland School for the Arts, studying with Howard Wiley and Dave Ellis before becoming a two-year member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Orchestra. She was a member of the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and took part in Stanford Jazz Workshops in 2012 and 2016. Now based in New York, Berliner is a student of Stefon Harris, Chris Dingman, and Matt Wilson at the New School and an active bandleader, heading a superlative young quartet and regularly subbing for mentor and SFJAZZ Collective vibraphonist Warren Wolf.

In addition to her preternatural musical abilities, Berliner is an accomplished writer and social activist, having self-published an array of essays and critiques including a nationally recognized piece on sexism in the jazz world, which was covered on the PBS NewsHour and was part of a panel discussion on sexism at New York’s Winter Jazz Fest featuring Angela Davis.

More

She has collaborated with Beck, Vijay Iyer, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ravi Coltrane, Jane Ira Bloom, and Tyshawn Sorey, and will release her full-length debut album, Azalea, in 2019.
