“One of the brightest young talents in the Big Easy”(Offbeat), New Orleans-born vocalist Sasha Masakowski takes the road less traveled. Daughter of jazz guitar luminary Steve Masakowksi, the singer and composer was raised in the stylistic maelstrom that comes with a professional musician’s life, assimilating those diverse musical extremes into her own approach that includes leadership of three bands working respectively in trad jazz, global fusion, and experimental rock. She performs music from her new Ropeadope release, Art Market, that balances the spirit of the second line with the city’s infectious bounce music culture and angular modern jazz, bound by her sweetly ethereal vocals.

Masakowski made her first major splash in 2009, named “Best Emerging Artist” by the Big Easy Association. She’s a veteran of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, appearing there for five straight years, and has earned accolades from Vanity Fair and DownBeat while performing and recording with artists including Irvin Mayfield, Zach Danziger, Jason Lindner, and Cliff Hines. With Art Market, Masakowski serves up a dizzying collection of what she calls “edgy, enlightened party music,” featuring electronically-inspired takes on New Orleans chestnuts “Jockamo” and “Struttin’ with some Barbecue” along with a multi-layered a capella version of Bill Evans’ “Interplay,” covers of songs by St. Vincent and her father, as well as some deeply funky originals.

There is a rare musical triple point where talent, vision, and a wicked sense-of-humor meet. Damn few artists ever make it there. I believe that it must be the address of one Sasha Hildegard Masakowski.
