Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Oakland native Satya Hawley is a star on the ascent, with a truly distinctive sound that crosses genres of soul, R&B, folk, and rock. She debuts with music from her latest EP Deep Blue.
A graduate of the Oakland School for the Arts who has since relocated to New Orleans, Satya counts India.Arie, Goapele, Mazzy Star, Corinne Bailey-Rae, and Prince among her myriad influences, and released her debut EP Flourish Against Fracture in 2020, just before the COVID lockdown effectively ended live music.
Between the pandemic and Hurricane Ida, the singer, whose name translates to “truth” in Sanskrit, was caught between the Bay Area and the Big Easy, which focused her time and energy into new compositions that were recorded for Deep Blue — a set of songs that had their debut at Oakland’s New Parish in December 2021 and chronicles her life as the world slowly emerged from isolation. In her words, “Deep Blue chronicles the path I took in traversing love and abuse, and the lessons I had to learn to restore my sovereignty and power. It is my journey of finding myself again.”
Recently, KRCW radio named Satya’s Deep Blue single “Oakland” as “Today’s Top Tune,” and she was listed by KQED, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Mercury News as a must-see act at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.
