Original show description below.

In celebration of Thelonious Monk’s centennial as well as the 10th anniversary of the Collective’s 2007 salute to Monk’s musical legacy, the band revisits their unique take on the legendary pianist’s signature compositions from their fourth annual tour, which included arrangements by current members Miguel Zénon and Matt Penman and former members Joshua Redman, Dave Douglas, Matt Penman, Eric Harland, André Hayward, and Renee Rosnes. A legendary figure synonymous with the development of bebop and one of the most idiosyncratic composers in jazz history, Monk composed many tunes now considered standards including “Brilliant Corners,” “Epistrophy,” “Crepuscule with Nellie,” “Bye-Ya,” “Bright Mississippi” and more. In their review, JazzTimes called the original 2007 live recording “a knockout.”
