At the peak of her creative powers in 1960, Sarah Vaughan left her contract with Mercury Records and signed to the fledgling Roulette label, releasing an impressive eleven albums during her five-year stint before returning to Mercury in 1965.

She recorded two intimate sessions during that period that set her voice against just guitar and bass accompaniment, and the first, After Hours, was a deeply romantic, ballad-heavy affair featuring hushed takes on the standards “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye,” “Great Day,” “Easy to Love,” and “In a Sentimental Mood,” backed by the sympathetic strings of bassist George Duvivier and guitarist Mundell Lowe.
