Our annual Hotplate Festival in the Joe Henderson Lab that honors the 100 greatest albums in jazz history with tribute performances by the best Bay Area musicians.
ABOUT THIS SHOW
Oakland-based bassist, composer, and bandleader Caroline Chung is among the most active musicians and collaborators in the Bay Area. The leader of Citizens Jazz, she released her full-length debut album in March, Sounds of Haejin, featuring SF Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, vocalist Lilan Kane, and guitarist Khalil Doak-Anthony. She makes her Hotplate debut with music from vocalist Nina Simone’s 1967 RCA Victor classic, Silk & Soul.
Recorded at the height of Simone’s visibility as an artist, activist, and Civil Rights figure, Silk & Soul was her second recording released by RCA Victor, and includes her iconic version of Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” — a recording that became synonymous with both Simone and the Civil Rights Movement.
She received a GRAMMY nomination for her performance of Morris Bailey Jr.’s “Go To Hell” (losing to Aretha Franklin’s recording of “Respect”), and the album also features Martha Holmes’ examination of racism in “Turning Point,” the searching gospel of Andy Stroud’s “Love O’ Love,” and the soulful groove of “It Be’s That Way Sometimes,” written by Simone’s brother Sam Waymon.
Prior to each performance, DJ Chungtech will spin a special curated vinyl DJ set that compliments this evening's music.
