ABOUT THIS SHOW
Tenor saxophonist and Berkeley native Jessica Jones has led the Jessica Jones Quartet for 30 years, producing five critically acclaimed albums including her latest, 2019’s The Continuum. She has worked with artists including Joseph Jarman, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, and Peter Apfelbaum, as well as a variety of Haitian, Caribbean and African bands, building a career as a masterful instrumentalist.
Part of the first wave of kids to come up through the Berkeley public school system’s innovative jazz education program, Jones was mentored as a young teen by free jazz drummer Charles Moffett, and connected with another key Ornette Coleman collaborator in the late 1980s when Don Cherry settled in the Bay Area.
With her singular background in mind, it’s appropriate that for this night Jones and her quartet honor Coleman and his landmark 1959 Atlantic release, The Shape of Jazz to Come — the debut of Coleman’s classic working quartet with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. The album features Coleman’s contribution to the standards songbook, “Lonely Woman,” and has been added to both the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry and the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.
Prior to each performance, DJ Weekend Girl will spin a special curated vinyl DJ set that compliments this evening's music.

The haunting 'Lonely Woman' is a stone-cold classic, and 'Congeniality' and 'Peace' aren't far behind. Any understanding of jazz's avant-garde should begin here.
