Multi-reed player, composer and bandleader Matt Renzi honors the memory of his former teacher, Joe Henderson, with music from the late saxophone legend and Bay Area resident’s 1986 live Blue Note trio recording The State of the Tenor, Vols. 1 & 2.
An artist whose work bridges the worlds of straight-ahead jazz, free form improvisation, and contemporary classical music, Renzi has led or co-led over a dozen albums including his latest, Arm-Sized Legging, a 2020 chamber-jazz recording featuring his Cello Quartet. As a sideman and collaborator, Renzi has worked with Eddie Marshall, Eberhard Weber, Ben Monder, Bobo Setenson, Michael Formanek, and Marc Johnson.
A fiery and ecstatic late period gem, The State of the Tenor showcases Henderson firmly at the top of his game, leading a trio featuring fellow legends Ron Carter and Al Foster in a Sonny Rollins-inspired piano-less setting at New York’s iconic Village Vanguard. Originally released on two LPs, the expansive recording runs the gamut of compositions, from the leader’s indelible classics to well-loved standards and lesser-performed works by Thelonious Monk, Sam Rivers, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Ron Carter, and Charles Mingus. The Penguin Guide to Jazz includes the album as part of its suggested “core collection” of essential recordings.
