SFJAZZ Hotplate Series:
Our monthly Hotplate series in the Joe Henderson Lab honors the 100 greatest albums in jazz history with tribute performances by the best Bay Area musicians.
Pianist and composer Peter Horvath returns to Hotplate with his tribute to one of his primary influences, Herbie Hancock, with this performance honoring Hancock’s 1965 Blue Note masterwork Maiden Voyage. Horvath’s appearance marks 12 years, almost to the day, of his first Hotplate tribute to Hancock back in 2010.
A native of Budapest, Horvath has been part of the Bay Area scene since the 1980s and has been a first-call session player since his arrival, touring with R&B and fusion artists including Victor Bailey and Lalah Hathaway as well as working as a straight-ahead jazz pianist with Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Eddie Henderson. His newest album, Absolute Reality, is his first release as a leader in 20 years, and features appearances by saxophonist Bob Mintzer, trumpeter Randy Brecker, and drummer Lenny White.
Balancing accessible hard bop melodic writing with more exploratory approaches, Maiden Voyage is widely considered to be the pianist’s finest 1960s recording. Recorded two years after Hancock joined Miles Davis’ epochal Second Great Quintet, the album was his fifth as a leader and shows the modal influence of Davis across it’s five ocean-themed compositions, which include the timeless standards “Dolphin Dance,” “The Eye of the Hurricane,” and the title tune.
