Hailing from the Bay Area’s first family of jazz, multi-instrumentalist Smith Dobson V returns to the JHL with his masterful quintet. An invaluable contributor to the Bay Area jazz scene for more than two decades, the Santa Cruz-raised multi-instrumentalist brims with creativity. He’s worked as a vibraphonist and drummer (performing widely with trumpeter Erik Jekabson), but these days he’s concentrating on reeds, and for this JHL engagement he’s bringing his soprano, alto and tenor saxophones.

Whichever horn he’s wielding, Dobson possesses a lithe tone inspired by his abiding love for Lester Young. Focusing on his original compositions and arrangements, his band features some of the region’s finest improvisers, including baritone saxophonist Charlie Gurke, ubiquitous bassist John Wiitala, insistently creative pianist Dahveed Behroozi, and drummer Hamir Atwal, whose national profile is rising rapidly via his work with Myra Melford and Ben Goldberg. The scion of an illustrious Bay Area musical family dating back generations, Dobson was weaned on jazz. His late father was a beloved pianist known as a first-call accompanist who spent years working with Bobby Hutcherson. His mother, jazz vocalist Gail Dobson, is a tireless mentor of young musicians, and his older sister Sasha Dobson is a highly creative New York vocalist. He hasn’t fallen far from the family tree.
